• Gov. Sarah Palin, former Republican vice presidential candidate, appeared on the Oct. 13, 2008 cover of Newsweek with the following headline tucked in next to the closeup shot of her: 'She's One of the Folks (And that's the problem).' Editor Jon Meacham wrote an essay about how Gov. Sarah Palin's populist view of high office is risky for the country. And there have been complaints in some circles that the cover photo used to highlight this skeptical essay is equally unflattering and wasn't Photoshopped even slightly to even out skin tones and remove slight imperfections. Critics note that it's pretty standard to touch up photos these days, especially close-ups, to be more flattering.
  But Palin has not been one who has been afraid of the unvarnished truth, and she has always embraced those "populist" roots that Newsweek calls out as being problematic.

• In another Newsweek cover in September, 2008, editors used a cutout of a 2002 Alaska Stock photo shot by Judy Patrick for this controversial cover. They made no attempt to hide the date of the photo, printing "circa 2002" on the cover and mentioning it again in Jon Meacham's editors letter.
