The Jaycee Dugard Kidnapping

• Dugard was just 11 years old when she was snatched off the street as she walked to a bus stop near her home in South Lake Tahoe, Calif. On Aug. 26, she walked into a Northern California police station, accompanied by Garrido, and said she was Jaycee.

• From prison, Garrido penned a letter to a California TV station, apologizing for his actions, station officials said Oct. 29. The letter also suggests that a religious conversion cured him of sexual deviancy. Garrido is charged with kidnapping Dugard in 1991 and holding her captive for 18 years. During that time, she gave birth to two daughters, allegedly fathered by Garrido.

• Garrido and his wife, Nancy, above, were arraigned on 29 counts, including forcible abduction, rape and false imprisonment. They entered not guilty pleas. Nancy Garrido, 54, is believed to have been with her husband when Dugard was kidnapped and dragged into a car, police said. In a court filing, prosecutors said a stun gun was used to subdue the girl when she was grabbed.

• Dugard's two daughters, ages 11 and 15, were photographed at a birthday party on Aug. 15. Their faces have been blurred to protect their identity because they are minors. Media reports have said the two girls learned only after the Garridos' arrests that Dugard was their mother and not their older sister.

• Dugard was forced to live in squalid tents and makeshift shelters in the Garridos' backyard in Antioch, Calif., according to officials. Police said Aug. 28 they missed a chance to rescue Dugard in November 2006 after a neighbor called to complain that people were living in tents in the backyard of the Garrido home. A deputy gave Phillip Garrido a warning but never went into the backyard.

• What authorities found three years later horrified them. They said Dugard and her daughters had been kept apart from the rest of the world. "None of the [Dugard] children have ever been to school, they've never been to a doctor," El Dorado County Undersheriff Fred Kollar said. • In 1992, an anonymous caller told police he saw a girl who looked like kidnap victim Jaycee Dugard in a gas station in Oakley, Calif., the San Francisco Chronicle reported. The man said the girl got into a yellow van, possibly a Dodge. Such a vehicle was found on the property of accused kidnappers Phillip and Nancy Garrido -- just two miles from the gas station.
