The Jaycee Dugard Kidnapping

• On Aug. 26, Dugard walked into a Northern California police station, accompanied by her accused abductor, Phillip Garrido, and told authorities who she was. In October, People magazine published the first photo of Dugard since she was freed. Now 29, she had two daughters while in captivity.

• Dugard's two daughters, ages 11 and 15, were photographed at a birthday party on Aug. 15. Their faces have been blurred to protect their identity because they are minors. • Dugard was forced to live in squalid tents and makeshift shelters in the Garridos' backyard in Antioch, Calif., according to officials. Police said on Aug. 28 that they missed a chance to rescue Dugard in November 2006 after a neighbor called to complain that people were living in tents behind the Garrido home. A deputy gave Phillip Garrido a warning but never went into the backyard.

• What authorities found three years later horrified them. They said Dugard and her daughters had been kept apart from the rest of the world. "None of the [Dugard] children have ever been to school, they've never been to a doctor," El Dorado County Undersheriff Fred Kollar said. • The mystery of what happened to Dugard began unraveling in August, when University of California, Berkeley, police called Phillip Garrido's parole officer and reported that he had been seen with two children on campus. Police said Garrido told his parole officer the children were his, and that he eventually revealed he had kidnapped Dugard.

• Carl Probyn, Dugard's stepfather, holds photos of her as a girl. He witnessed her kidnapping. Probyn told police he saw a car with two people inside drive up to the girl. • Katherine "Katie" Callaway Hall was abducted and raped by Garrido in 1976. He was sentenced to 50 years in federal prison and five years to life in Nevada. Records show he served 11 years in federal prison and seven months in Nevada before he was paroled in California in August 1988. "Don't let him on the streets again," Hall said in a Sept. 3 interview with The Associated Press. "He is dangerous and he is a liar. Don't let him out.
