Born Amid the Rubble

• "I don't have anything for my child," Joseph said in French Creole, as she breast-fed her firstborn in her makeshift home in Jean Jacques Dessaline park. The new mother worries that her son will not be getting good milk as her own diet consists only of rice and beans. Joseph also said, if not for the generosity of neighbors, she would have no clothing or baby wipes for her child.

• Little Allens is among thousands of other infants who are spending their first days in untenable conditions, facing increased risk of infection in the cramped quarters. But the child's father, Necker Neptune, 33, pictured at right, said he doesn't think his family will be able to leave the tent city anytime soon. Neptune lost his job as a carpenter's apprentice when his place of work was toppled by the earthquake.

• In the tent city, the stink of urine lingers, and the earthquake survivors sleep alongside trash and dirty pots and pans. For Joseph, as many new Haitian mothers, the destruction is taking its toll. As she swatted at mosquitoes, the 24-year-old mother said, "The world is so hard; I don't want to have children again."
