Culture of Photography-- Daily After Thought

There is a plethora of personal photoblogs on the internet, but I recently came across a choice one. Carmen Winant started dailyafterthought on April 11th as a salon exhibiting a single image every day for a year. Her portraits are ostensibly simple, yet quietly elegant. Her protagonists are cloaked; often caught in unsettling moments, her characters appear self-conscious or obfuscated, retreating from the photographers gaze despite the acute square frame.

My favorite images thus far are 'The Cut' and 'This is my first day'. Simple maneuvers such as cutting ones hair or holding a child become tortured and regal, but we are still left wondering what the rest of the story is. I think interesting portraits accomplish just this- they portray the mundane as monumental while alluding to a continued narrative. Our lives are mostly composed of a series of inconsequential segments, but these micro-segments eventually compose who we are. The moments are monumental in they're own right, and its nice to see them heralded through an external gaze. I personally hope the project extends beyond a year.
