Missile mis-shot- Posted by: Lee Van Grack

Two images made available Thursday, July 10, 2008, by Sepah News, a service owned by Iran's Revolutionary Guards, are seen above. The image below shows three missiles being launched in Iran. The photograph on top was apparently altered to add a fourth missile lifting off from a desert range, according to defense analyst Mark Fitzpatrick, director of the Non-Proliferation Program for the London-based Institute For Strategic Studies. Many newspapers and Web sites around the world displayed a faked photo yesterday. The photo showed four Iranian missiles being launched in a display of military strength. The missiles launched were a new version of the Shahab-3, supposedly capable of reaching Israel with a nuclear device. In reality, one of the missiles failed to launch, but rather than show the less-than-perfect reality, the public relations arm of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, Sepah News, chose to send out a digitally altered image that appears to show all four missiles launching successfully. The image was then picked up by Agence France-Presse who distributed the photograph to media outlets.
The weblog, Little Green Footballs is credited with first catching the fake and this was later followed up by photo editors at the New York Times who blogged about it and contacted Agence France-Presse to point out the fact that the image was manipulated. Agence France-Presse then made a decision to pull the image.
