Olympic Stars: Where Are They Now?

  • Marion Jones Now:
    In 2007 Jones testified to using steroids before Sydney. She was stripped of all Olympic medals and lost all of her sponsors. Jones was sentenced to 6 months in prison for perjury stemming from the steroid controversy.

  • Tommie Smith and John Carlos Then:
    In 1968 Smith set a world record in the 200-meter and teammate John Carlos nabbed the bronze. On the podium, while the U.S. national anthem played, the pair raised black-gloved hands and bowed their heads in protest of the conditions that African Americans were facing at home. Their actions met with such outrage that they were suspended from the U.S. team and banned from the Olympic Village. It is remembered as one of the most memorable events in athletics.

  • Tommie Smith and John Carlos Now:
    Following the games both Smith and Carlos were ostracized and not given the respect they deserved until recently. A statue was raised in their honor on the campus of San Jose State University in 2005. The two received the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage at the 2008 ESPY Awards in July.

  • '92 Dream Team (Michael Jordan, Larry Byrd, Magic Johnson) Then:
    The 1992 Summer Games hosted the first U.S. basketball able to use NBA players. The all-star team plowed through opponents, winning all of their games by more than 30 points. The event was so spectacular that opposing players would often seek autographs and take pictures with Team USA.

  • '92 Dream Team (Michael Jordan, Larry Byrd, Magic Johnson) Now:
    Ten of the 12 players on the roster have since been named to the NBA's list of the 50 greatest players. Many from the team, such as Jordan, Byrd, and Magic, have become living legends of the game. Including coach Chuck Daly's two rings with the Detroit Pistons, the Dream Team won a combined 25 NBA championships.

  • Betty Okino Then:
    Due to injury, Okino was could not compete in the 1992 Olympic Trials. She was given a private trial, during which she proved herself worthy of the team. At the 1992 Summer Games she assisted in winning the first U.S. team medal at a fully-attended Olympics. The triple pirouette on the balance beam was originate by her, and has been dubbed "the Okino."

  • Betty Okino Now:
    Okino has since taken her talents to Hollywood. She began as a performer at SeaWorld before making her way into the world of acting. Okino has appeared in television shows such as 'Moesha' and 'Undressed,' and was featured in the film 'Æon Flux.'

  • Evander Holyfield Then:
    The Atmore, Alabama native rose to prominence after winning boxing silver in the 1973 Pan American Games in Caracas, Venezuela. He then went on to win a National Golden Gloves title, before taking bronze at the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, in the Light Heavyweight class.

  • Evander Holyfield Now:
    Holyfield is, perhaps, most popular for his professional bouts with Mike Tyson and that infamous bite. Most recently, it was announced that his $10 million home in suburban Atlanta was auctioned off due to foreclosure. He is also battling allegations of steroid and human growth hormone use.

  • Dominique Dawes Then:
    In 1996 Dawes became the first African American to capture individual gold in artistic gymnastics. She was an important element of the 1996 Summer Games' "Magnificent 7" women's team, which grabbed the gold in Atlanta. Dawes is also one of the few gymnasts to have competed in three Olympic games.
